Why the Freezer Works But the Fridge Section Doesn't

Most refrigerators top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, and French-door models use a single evaporator coil that cools both the fridge and freezer compartments. Cold air produced at the evaporator coil is circulated to both sections by an evaporator fan motor. The freezer gets cold air first since it sits directly adjacent to the coil, and the fridge section receives cold air through a damper or duct running from the freezer.

When the defrost system fails, frost accumulates on the evaporator coil over days or weeks. That frost eventually builds into a solid block of ice that blocks airflow entirely. The coil itself keeps working which is why the freezer stays cold but no cold air can circulate to the fridge section because the ice is blocking the fan and the air path.

The result: freezer works perfectly, fridge is warm.

The 4 Most Likely Causes

1. Failed defrost heater

The defrost heater runs periodically to melt frost off the evaporator coil. When it fails, frost accumulates unchecked and eventually blocks all airflow to the fridge compartment. This is the most common cause of this specific symptom. How to confirm: unplug the fridge, remove the freezer back panel, and look at the evaporator coil. If it is encased in a solid block of ice, the defrost system has failed.

2. Failed defrost thermostat

The defrost thermostat monitors coil temperature and signals the heater to cycle on and off. A failed thermostat prevents the heater from ever activating, causing the same frost buildup as a dead heater. These two components are often tested and replaced together since the labour to access them is identical and the parts are inexpensive.

3. Failed defrost timer or control board

Older refrigerators use a mechanical defrost timer that cycles the heater at set intervals. Newer models use the main control board. A stuck timer or a failed control board can leave the fridge in permanent cooling mode never triggering a defrost cycle. Control board failures are less common than heater and thermostat failures but more expensive to repair.

4. Failed evaporator fan motor

If the evaporator fan motor fails, cold air from the coil cannot circulate to the fridge section even if the coil itself is working and frost-free. This produces the same warm-fridge, cold-freezer symptom. You can often hear this failure: open the freezer door and listen for the fan. If you hear nothing or a grinding sound, the fan motor has likely failed.

How to Temporarily Restore Cooling While You Wait for a Technician

If you need to slow food spoilage while waiting for a repair appointment, manually defrost the refrigerator:

• Unplug the fridge completely.

• Remove all food from both sections and place it in a cooler with ice.

• Leave the fridge and freezer doors open and place towels on the floor to catch meltwater.

• Allow the frost to melt completely this typically takes 24 to 48 hours.

• Once all ice has melted, plug the fridge back in.

• The fridge section will cool normally again — until the frost cycle repeats, usually within 8 to 24 hours if the defrost system is still failed.

This is a temporary fix only. The frost will return and the fridge will warm up again within a day or two. A permanent fix requires replacing the failed defrost component.
