When an appliance breaks down, one of the first questions homeowners ask is: is it worth fixing, or is it time to replace it? The answer almost always depends on the age of the appliance. A $200 repair on a 3-year-old fridge is a straightforward yes. The same repair on a 16-year-old fridge is a harder call.


Knowing how long your appliances are expected to last makes that decision much easier. Here is a breakdown of average appliance lifespans, what shortens them, what extends them, and how to use that information to make smarter repair and replacement decisions as an Edmonton homeowner.

Front-load washers tend to have shorter lifespans than top-loaders in practical terms — not because the mechanical components are weaker, but because the door gasket, door seal, and bearing system are more susceptible to mould and moisture damage, and consumers are less likely to perform the cleaning maintenance the manufacturer specifies.


What extends washer life

  • Using HE (high-efficiency) detergent in the correct quantity excess detergent is one of the leading causes of drum bearing failure and mould buildup.

  • Cleaning the drum monthly with a washing machine cleaner cycle.

  • Leaving the door open between cycles on front-loaders to prevent gasket mould.

  • Not overloading — a consistently overloaded machine puts accelerated stress on the bearings, suspension rods, and motor.

  • Cleaning the pump filter every 3 to 6 months (front-loaders have an accessible filter at the bottom front).


When to repair vs. replace


Repair is almost always worthwhile under 8 years. Between 8 and 12 years, repair if the cost is under 50 percent of replacement. Over 12 years, assess based on the specific repair — a $150 pump replacement on a 13-year-old washer still makes sense. A $400 bearing job on the same machine is borderline.


Dryers: 13 to 16 Years

Dryers are mechanically simpler than washers — no water, no drum bearings under the same load, and fewer moving parts overall. The components that fail most often are the heating element (electric), gas igniter and valve coils (gas), drive belt, drum rollers, and thermal fuse. All of these are repairable and relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of a new dryer.


The single biggest factor that shortens dryer life in Edmonton homes is a blocked or poorly routed vent line. A restricted vent causes the dryer to overheat on every cycle, burning out thermal fuses and heating elements repeatedly and stressing the motor.   • Cleaning the lint trap after every single load not every few loads, every load.

  • Having the full vent line professionally inspected and cleared once a year.

  • Checking the exterior vent flap seasonally to make sure it opens freely and has not been blocked by debris or ice.


When to repair vs. replace


Dryers are worth repairing well into their lifespan because of their mechanical simplicity. A $140 igniter or $150 element replacement on a 12-year-old dryer is still good value. Motor replacements ($250 to $400) become marginal on dryers over 12 years old.


Refrigerators: 13 to 17 Years

Refrigerators run continuously 24 hours a day, 365 days a year which means the compressor, condenser fan, and evaporator fan accumulate more operating hours than any other home appliance. The defrost system (heater, thermostat, and timer) cycles multiple times per day and is the most common failure point. The compressor is the most expensive component; when it fails on an older fridge, the repair-versus-replace calculation often tips toward replacement.


French-door and bottom-freezer models have more complex ice maker and water dispenser systems that add failure points compared to basic top-freezer models. Counter-depth and built-in refrigerators use smaller, higher-end compressors that tend to last longer but cost significantly more to replace when they do fail.

  • Cleaning the condenser coils once or twice a year — coils clogged with dust force the compressor to work harder and run hotter on every cycle.

  • Checking door gaskets annually and replacing them when they no longer seal firmly — a leaking gasket makes the compressor run constantly.

  • Keeping the fridge 75 to 80 percent full — a completely empty fridge loses cold air every time the door opens and the compressor cycles more frequently.

  • Keeping the fridge away from heat sources (ovens, dishwashers, direct sunlight) and giving it adequate ventilation clearance on the sides and back.

Slide-in gas ranges with electronic controls and convection fans have more failure points than basic freestanding models but still tend to outlast electric ranges with glass cooktops.

  • Cleaning burner caps and ports regularly — blocked ports cause incomplete combustion, which stresses the igniter and gas valve.

  • Not using the self-clean cycle more than twice a year — the extreme temperatures during self-clean are hard on oven igniters, temperature sensors, and door hinges.

Electric Ranges and Smooth-Top Cooktops: 13 to 17 Years

Electric ranges with coil elements are durable and inexpensive to repair — the coils themselves are the most common failure and cost very little to replace. Glass ceramic smooth-top cooktops are more vulnerable: a single crack from a dropped pot or thermal shock from setting a cold wet pan on a hot burner can render the cooktop unrepairable, regardless of the age of the appliance. Induction cooktops are the most reliable smooth surface option but have the most expensive control electronics when they do fail.


When to repair vs. replace


Coil element and switch replacements are worth doing at almost any age. Cracked glass cooktops must be assessed on a case-by-case basis — a replacement glass panel for a newer high-end range may cost $300 to $500 but still make sense; the same repair on an 11-year-old budget range may not.
